Wireless Laptop requirement: (you may click here to buy laptops online)

You will be required to have a wireless-network ready laptop computer to do your presentations. Classroom Protocol

Class Participation:

Participation in the weekly meetings is an important requirement of the course. The course is not just about your own project, but also about everyone else's. One objective of the course is to give you exposure to a cross-section of what is happening in Silicon Valley. Class attendance is not optional. I expect each student to be present and punctual at every scheduled class. You will be asked to present your project work regularly. Class participation will be used in part to determine your grade. Some aspects of this participation include the interaction with the project presenter and the submission of your weekly progress report, which must be done by 11:30 PM every Monday via your D2L online account . Additional penalties may also apply if you do not fully participate in the presentations or weekly report submission. The instructor reserves the right to ignore frivolous or inappropriate e-mail inquiries.

Dropping and Adding

Students are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures about add/drops, academic renewal, etc. Information on add/drops are available at http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/soc-fall/rec-298.html. Information about late drop is available at http://www.sjsu.edu/sac/advising/latedrops/policy/ . Students should be aware of the current deadlines and penalties for adding and dropping classes.

Assignments and Grading Policy

The course work will be as follows:

  • Each week you must turn in a brief one page progress report on what you did at work in the previous week. This report should place the work in the context of the overall project and be uploded to your D2L online account by 11 PM of every Monday.
  • Each student will be required to give a 20 minute presentation about his/her company, the job being performed, and how it relates to the company as a whole. The schedule for these presentations will be established during the first class meeting, and the required content and format will be discussed.
  • Each student will be required to write a 5-10 page report of a tutorial nature on a technical aspect of his/her project that the student finds interesting and can share with other students. The report is expected to have good English and style. The student will be expected to make a slide presentation that will, like the company talk, be about 20 minutes long. Both the technical report in Word and the power point presentation slide files should be uploaded by 11:00 PM the following Monday to your D2L online account.
  • The instructor will either visit or communicate via email/phone with student’s supervisor at work to get feedback and verify job description and performance.
  • At the end of the semester, each student must write a final report that describes the work done during the semester. An oral presentation based on the written report must also be given. The report should be at least 10 pages long (i.e. fairly detailed); the oral presentation will be about 20 minutes long. Both the Final report in Word and the power point presentation slide files should be uploaded by the official SJSU final schedule to your D2L online account .
  • A copy of the presentation slide should be uploaded, the Friday preceding the presentation, to voicethread.com and place it under cs180i-spring2010 group.

University Policies

Academic integrity

Students should know that the University’s Academic Integrity Policy is availabe at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/download/judicial_affairs/Academic_Integrity_Policy_S07-2.pdf. Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at San Jose State University and the University’s integrity policy, require you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The website for Student Conduct and Ethical Development is available at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/judicial_affairs/index.html.

Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presenting the work of another as your own, or the use of another person’s ideas without giving proper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If you would like to include in your assignment any material you have submitted, or plan to submit for another class, please note that SJSU’s Academic Policy F06-1 requires approval of instructors.

Campus Policy in Compliance with the American Disabilities Act

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need to make special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 requires that students with disabilities requesting accommodations must register with the DRC (Disability Resource Center) to establish a record of their disability.
